What is Slip Rating?
Slip Rating (R) is a ranking given to floor tiles to show their slip resistance.
It stands for Ramp Test and it’s designed to reduce the risk of slipping and falling in areas prone to moisture, such as:
- Bathrooms
- Kitchens
- Swimming pool decks
- Outdoor areas
Different types of tile slip ratings
- Pendulum Test
The Pendulum Test evaluates slipperiness whether wearing shoes or not. It assigns a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) rating to a tile, categorizing it into one of 3 categories:
- 0-24 rating has a high slip potential.
- 25-35 rating has a moderate slip potential.
- 36 + rating has a low slip potential.
- Ramp Test
Ramp Test is utilized to assess slipperiness while wearing shoes. Ratings in the Ramp Test range from R9 to R13.
R9 – Domestic internal use.
*If utilized in a bathroom, it’s recommended to use a mat for drying feet.
R10 – Living areas, kitchens, hallways.

R11 – Domestic use, office entrances, lavatories and commercial areas.
R12 – Larger commercial areas, external patios.
R13 – Around swimming pools, areas that may be constant wetness, slopes, commercial areas.
3. Barefoot Ramp Test
The Barefoot Ramp Test is employed to evaluate slipperiness when not wearing shoes. Tiles are classified as A, B & C.
A – is suitable for a barefoot, hallways and changing rooms.
B – is suitable for showers and pool surrounds.
C – is suitable for steps leading into swimming pools.
Within domestic properties, slip ratings serve as a helpful guide, as there are no specific requirements for particular rooms. They offer valuable insight into safety and practicality of tile choices, assisting homeowners in making informed decisions tailored to their unique needs.
